YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A pair of Cardinal Mooney football players officially committed to play in the college ranks.

A signing ceremony was held at Cardinal Mooney High School on Wednesday.

William Desmond officially committed to play for the John Carroll football program.

Mason Janis officially signed with the Robert Morris football program.

An All-State defensive end, Desmond is joining his brother, Jack, a 2022 Cardinal Mooney Graduate, at JCU.

“The coaches reached out to me, and really made me feel like they wanted me to be a part of the program,” Desmond said. “It’s also great that my brother plays there. It was a great experience playing with him at Cardinal Mooney, and I’m excited to get the chance to do that again.

Janis will continue his career as a placekicker in the college ranks. He joined the Cardinal Mooney football team late in the 2023 season when the Cardinals’ starter suffered a knee injury.

He went on to kick a 43-yard field goal against Akron Buchtel in the playoffs.

“This just all came together very fast, but I wanted to be prepared in case an opportunity like this came,” Janis said. “I’m thankful coach Pelini gave me a chance to kick for Cardinal Mooney, and for my teammates who were so supportive the entire time.”
