YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Activity is going on at the former South High School. A project there is underway to transform the property. WKBN 27 First News Community Affairs Director Dee Crawford talks with Reverend Gary Frost and Mike Pecchia about the work.

Mike Pecchia is president of Valley Christian School and Gary Frost is a board member.

“We are looking at developing South Field — South Fieldhouse,” Pecchia said. “Our football team has been practicing down there for about six years, so it’s been our field. And we hired a new coach a few years ago, and the coach has a vision. We need to fix this up and make this a better place for our football team and our track team.”

Pecchia said the school has a championship track team that runs on sidewalks.

“They need something better. Our kids do a lot with a little, and we just have the vision that it’s time to fix that up,” Pecchia said.

A turf field and eigh-lane track are part of the plan.

Valley Christian School is leading the effort in terms of the development of the program and is leading the fundraising.

“We’re getting ready to start and work on developing our capital campaign, which we hope to bring out in the fall,” Pecchia said.

Frost is a member of the board for Valley Christian School and has been involved for years.

“My son graduated from Valley Christian, two of my grandchildren, my granddaughters graduated from Valley Christian, and I have a grandson and granddaughter who are currently students there. It’s just a wonderful place. We love Valley Christian School,” Frost said.

Dee talks more about what is happening at the Former South High School on Tuesday.
