    Mathews state-bound for the first time since 2012

    NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Mathews topped Canton Central Catholic 4-1 in the OHSAA Division IV Softball Regional Final at the North Ridgeville High School on Friday afternoon.

    Mustangs seeking their first appearance in the state final four since 2012.

    The Mustangs plated three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Maddy Hufford’s 2-run double.

    Canton Central Catholic got on the board in the sixth inning, when Avery McMahon hit a solo home run with two outs, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

    But Ava Shugart answered right back for the Mustangs, delivering an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning.

    Mathews advances to face Monroeville (23-6) in the Division IV State Semifinals on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Akron’s Firestone Stadium.
