YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Speed cameras will be back on and running again when classes begin for Youngstown City Schools on Sept. 4.

Last year, the cameras were turned off as the city discovered how people who were issued citations could contest them in court.

Youngstown Law Director Lori Shells Simmons said a magistrate in municipal court will hear cases at night. To help pay the court cost, the money collected from the cameras will be split between the court, the city and the company supplying the cameras.

“This will be a sign to everybody — slow down, because we want to make sure everyone is safe. So, it’s not just for the children that are there, but also for the adults that are there to pick them up or teachers that are there to look over them getting their ride,” she said.

Only warnings will be issued during the first two weeks of school. Fines will be issued starting Aug. 18.

Fines will be $100 for going six to 14 mph over the speed limit, $125 for going 15 to 20 mph over and $150 for going 20 mph or more over.
