NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County celebrated local police K9 officers as one local team retired and another stepped in.

An event was held Thursday night at the Springfield branch in recognition of National Police K9 Day, which is on September 1.

Springfield Township Police K9s were on hand to give demonstrations and explain their job duties to the public.

Jenni Hemphill, Springfield Library supervisor, says celebrating the commitment of these officers is important.

“They do so much than just, say, look for drugs or other types of paraphernalia. They keep our communities safe,” she said.

During the program, it was announced that K9 Officer Havoc and his handler, Officer Glenn Gorey, will retire.

K9 Officer Dutch and Officer Jeremy Blackson will take over as Springfield’s new K9 team.
