PERKINS TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) — After a train hit a car Saturday evening in Erie County, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.

Troopers were called to the area of Perkins Avenue near US 6 in Perkins Township for reports of the crash just before 10 p.m.

Upon arrival, troopers learned the 26-year-old woman driving a Toyota Scion “attempted to cross the tracks while the crossing gate bars were coming down,” according to a press statement.

That’s when the vehicle got stuck between the gates. While the woman was able to exit her vehicle, the Norfolk Southern train coming down the tracks was not able to stop in time, troopers said.

The impact sent the Toyota up in flames and reportedly disabled the train.

Traffic to the area was shut down for four hours, troopers said, but has since reopened.

They should be teaching train safety in drivers Ed, along with patience! Good the driver didn’t lose her life, just her car. She’s probably one of those on the freeway too that pulls a 50 foot cut in front of a semi!
