Police investigate 2 child THC incidents in Warren

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Warren police were called about two separate incidents involving children ingesting THC over the weekend.

The first happened Friday at about 4:15 p.m. when officers were called about a teen lying by the side of the road “barely responsive.”

The caller said the teenager’s father took him home, and police followed up at a nearby house where they talked to the father who said that he left to pick up his daughter and came home to find his 14-year-old in “that state.”

The father said he suspected the teen ate a THC edible he had in his bedroom and showed police where he had hidden the package. Officers noted the bright green packaging that could have been mistaken for candy, the report stated.

Officers noted there had been no prior calls to the home and due to the age of the teen, determined that this was an isolated incident that didn’t require an arrest or further investigation, the report stated.

On Saturday at about 1:20 a.m., the Warren Police Department was notified by Akron Children’s Hospital’s emergency room that medical staff was treating a 2-year-old child who tested positive for THC.

The offense location in the police report was listed as Bennett Avenue NW and Commerce Avenue NW.

There have been several reports in the Valley of children ingesting THC from marijuana products, primarily gummies. One case in Sharon was a near fatality.

Youngstown police said in May they have seen a “substantial increase” in children consuming marijuana-laced edibles and getting seriously sick.

Law enforcement is urging parents and caregivers to keep edibles far away from children.
