Battle of Belmont headlines Friday’s Game of the Week

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – WKBN’s High School Football Game of the Week will emanate from Girard’s Arrowhead Stadium as ‘The Battle of Belmont’ takes place with the Leopards visiting the Indians.

Girard scored 56 points last week as the Indians will look to continue their high-scoring ways. Liberty looks to get on track this week after dropping Thursday’s game to Warren JFK by just three points (22-19).

… Girard collected a 49-7 victory , a year ago, over the home-standing Liberty Leopards. The Indians’ quarterback Tuff McConahy threw for 260 yards and 2 scores. Ahmad Curd ran for 78 yards but scored 4 times on the ground. The Girard defense overpowered Liberty’s ground game as the Leopards were able to gain just 53 yards on 22 carries.

-Girard has won four games in a row against Liberty; outscoring the Leopards by a total of 163-32.

-Girard is coming off its 56-25 win at Jefferson on Friday. Josiah Hunter scored four touchdowns that included an 88-yard kickoff return; while also rushing for 138 yards. Freshman AJ Pearson went into the endzone three times on the ground as well. Dominick Tolone was a perfect 4 for 4 for 120 yards passing. The 56 points Girard scored was the most that the team has been able to accumulate in a single game since the season opener of the 2019 campaign – a 60-0 win at East Palestine.

-Girard is seeking its 8th straight playoff appearance.

-For Liberty, Dawaun Moody ran for 137 yards and scored twice while completing 8 passes for 85 yards in the Leopards’ 22-19 setback at the hands of Warren JFK .

-Liberty has come up short in five consecutive outings in the month of August.

-The Leopards are seeking its first winning season since 2018 (7-3).
