WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Warren’s multi-million dollar Student Recreation and Wellness Center project is nearing completion.

Crews are just putting the final touches on the center which Superintendent Steve Chiaro says is outstanding.

“Knowing that all of this is coming to fruition and the plan is taking shape is a great feeling,” Chairo said.

Some of the center’s features include a covered sand pit for long and triple jump, the study stairs near the front entrance, and a lounge area.

“I see such a vision for our students, our staff utilizing it, whether it’s independently or collaboratively,” said Nina Elias, wellness center administrator.

The $34 million project — almost half of which was covered by grants — came at no additional cost to the taxpayers.

The fire suppression system is scheduled for inspection later this week. Chiaro hopes the certification for occupancy will come soon after. Then the focus can shift toward getting students in the center, which will be used for both recreational and academic activities.

“We believe this facility if utilized the right way, will continue to help children in the City of Warren be successful,” said Chairo.

“Whether it’s a 4-year-old using it or an 18-year-old using it, I think there are opportunities for every single student in this district, and I’m just so excited for that because they deserve it,” said Elias.

So as the Warren G. Harding Raiders prepare to enter Mollenkoff Stadium for the first time this season Friday night, it’ll be in the shadow of the new facility at the end zone.

“I hope this becomes the place that students want to be, where they want to go and where they want to grow and so that’s really important that this becomes the place for children in the city of Warren,” Chairo said.

District leaders hope to celebrate the Student Recreation and Wellness Center’s grand opening in mid to late September or early October.
