Location change made to pumpkin show at Canfield Fair after loss of pumpkin barn

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) — The pumpkin show at the Canfield Fair started in a tent about 50 years ago, before moving into its own building. That building deteriorated and was destroyed in the spring.

That means there’s a new location for the pumpkins. It moved right next door to what was the vegetable barn and Grange building. The new building has allowed the exhibit to have some breathing space.

“It’s wide open,” said Craig Myers, a member of the Canfield Fair Board of Directors who oversees the pumpkin show. “There’s a lot more room to mingle and look and spend some time in a pumpkin bar, other than feeling it’s full of people, and you got to get out as quick as you can. So we’re kind of happy.”

All of the exhibits have stayed the same: the tree of pumpkins, the pumpkin cut-out great for pictures — plus all the gourds and squash you can find. Even the children’s exhibit of decorated pumpkins remains.

Fitting everything into a new space has been a jigsaw puzzle, but all of your favorites are still there, though some have moved. The vegetables were moved to the hay and grain building. The ODNR booth has been moved into barn 25.

There’s also more space to see the fair’s largest pumpkins.

While some things change, others remain the same, and one of the constants is a secret of the fair: commemorative chips. There’s a picture of the famous cut-out where many people get their picture taken on one side and the Canfield Fair logo on the other.

There are just 500 of these commemorative chips made. For more details, fairgoers will have to ask when they visit the pumpkin barn.
