YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Reports said a man was cited late Wednesday for firing a gun into the air while celebrating his birthday.

Rey Mendoza, 31, was charged with discharging firearms within city limits, a first-degree misdemeanor, after police were called about 10:15 p.m. to the 1200 block of North Hartford for gunfire.

A witness told police they heard about 20 shots and pointed towards the 2300 block of Roy Street, reports said. Police went there and found 20 9mm shell casings in a drive, reports said.

Police knocked on the door where they found the casings and spoke to Mendoza, who told them he was celebrating his birthday while firing his gun in the air.

Mendoza is expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.
