CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) — A pair of steers has been reunited with their family after a nearly month of searching .

Afton and Zoey Douglas of New Springfield lost three of four steers they were planning to show at the Canfield Fair just four weeks before it started. One was returned but passed away, and the other two were roaming for weeks. A local man caught them Saturday night, and they were brought home Sunday morning.

While it’s too late to sell them for the fair, the sisters are happy they’re back home.

“It does suck that we could not have brought them here. If it had been a week earlier, we probably couldn’t have showed them, but maybe they could’ve at least sold,” Zoey said.

Zoey was at the fair when she got the news of their return.

“I can’t believe this. It just — I didn’t expect it to happen, not at least this week or in the middle of the fair out of nowhere. I just can’t believe this. It’s just over like that. I mean, we’re done. We don’t have to worry about it anymore,” she said.

Zoey said the steers look like they’re in good condition and they’ll sell them after the fair. While she thinks they probably won’t make a profit, she said it’s still a better outcome than they expected.

“It’s nice that we at least have them back and we can sell them to people that want the meat anyways, and we get some ourselves and it’s not a complete waste,” she said.

This was supposed to be their last year showing steers for the fair. However, the sisters don’t want to end on a bad note.

“We’re going to do it again next year. Only one each. We’re not going to do the four again. Just with how everything went this year, we don’t want it to be our last year. It was kind of a sucky last year,” Zoey said.

The Douglas family says they’re grateful for everyone who took the time to help them search for the steers.
