YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Years ago, a Youngstown man brought the tropics to his wife.

Norm Cappitte planted banana trees in his yard along North Brockway Avenue , so she could experience plants just like they have in the warm climate. Norm and his wife passed away in 2022 and their sons are carrying on the tradition of growing them in Northeast Ohio.

More than 300 banana plants are growing and flourishing even bigger under their watch. They take pride in learning their father’s growing ability and love sharing their knowledge and products with others.

“That’s what I want to do. I want to share them throughout our community more, instead of just right here. You know, it’s nice, but so many want them, even our leaves,” said Norm Capitte Jr.

Recently, Norm sold 50 leaves which were used in a big family dinner.

He welcomes visitors to the West Side location to see the trees and will share his knowledge on growing with anyone who asks.
