YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Rivalry games such as Poland-Canfield and Sharon-Hickory highlight a strong week of high school football in the area.

    Maple Heights (3-0) at Boardman (2-1), 7 p.m.
Coach DJ Dota has the Spartans at 2-1 after dropping its week two matchup to unbeaten Lake before coming away with a 15-0 win over Chaney last Friday. This week, they’ll be pitted against unbeaten Maple Heights. The Mustangs also are coming off a shutout win over Linden McKinley (24-0).

    Poland (3-0) at Canfield (1-2), 7 p.m.
The rivalry between Poland and Canfield, “Battle for 224,” is one of the most intense showdowns on any athletic calendar during the year. This one should prove to be more of the same as Poland will look for back-to-back wins in the series.
Last year, the Bulldogs came away with a 10-7 win . Prior to that victory, Poland had last defeated Canfield in 2014 (the last time they won back-to-back games in 2010-14, five straight). Canfield has won 18 of their last 19 games at home. The Bulldogs have held its first opponents to a total of 17 points including last week’s 19-0 win over Firelands. Vito Komara (103) and Chase Jones (90) accounted for 193 rushing yards for Poland.

    Niles (1-2) at Hubbard (3-0), 7 p.m.
The Eagles have played exceptional defense and have been able to get big plays from its offense en route to a 3-0 start after last week’s 24-3 win at Howland. Hubbard has back-to-back games against unbeaten Poland and Struthers in the next two weeks – they can’t look past Niles though. The Red Dragons lost both of its first two games but rebounded nicely in their 26-6 win last Friday at Lakeside.

    Maplewood (2-1) at Lakeview (2-1), 7 p.m.
The Sailors look to get back on track after dropping a heart-breaking 31-29 decision at Saegertown a week ago. Lakeview had won its first two games with former standout Blake Reddick as their head coach. Leyton Zacherl has thrown for 454 yards, and Brayden Booher (298) and Blake Skiles (220) have each run for over 200 yards this season. Maplewood bounced back from its week two loss to Reynolds to hand Cochranton a 27-16 setback. Lakeview shut out the Tigers, last year, 46-0 on September 15.

    East Palestine (2-1) at Lisbon (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs are seeking its first three-win season since 2018 (5-5). East Palestine has defeated Newton Falls and Bridgeport in its two home games this season. After having its week two matchup with Fairport Harding canceled; Lisbon rebounded with a 20-6 win over Waterloo last week. The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference season gets underway this week.

    F itch (3-0) at Riverside (1-2), 7 p.m.
The Falcons have been on a roll after toppling GlenOak -35-0 – at home in week three. Deon’Dray Richard ran for 176 yards on 16 carries against GlenOak. Davanzo Tate III rushed for two scores also and threw a touchdown pass to Brayden Bryant. Coach TJ Parker’s group will look to keep it going as they’ll play at the Riverside Beavers – who have lost their last two by a total of 9 points (against Green and Cathedral Prep).

    Reynolds (3-0) at Sharpsville (2-1), 7 p.m.
Sharpsville hasn’t played since August 30, a 12-point loss to Greenville. Last week, Kennedy Catholic forfeited so the Blue Devils are hungry to get back out there. The Raiders are undefeated through week three after a thrilling win at Mercer, 32-31. Can Reynolds continue its undefeated start?

    Lakeview (3-0) at South Range (3-0), 7 p.m.
What a showdown to kick off the Northeast 8 Conference schedule but a pair of unbeatens in South Range and Lakeview. Last week, the Bulldogs allowed its first points of the season in their 19-6 win over Liberty. The Raiders just keep humming along as they’ve not allowed a point to be scored since week one.

    Girard (2-1) at Struthers (3-0), 7 p.m.
Last year, Girard and Struthers met twice. The Wildcats got by the home-standing Indians by a touchdown (35-28 ). Then, in the post-season, Struthers toppled Girard – 21-16 in week 11. Girard’s last win against the ‘Cats came on October 15, 2021 – 31-12. Struthers is off to an undefeated start and has held its first three opponents to 7 points or less in each outing. The Wildcats downed Dohn Community, 40-6, in week three by allowing just 79 yards of total offense. Girard is rebounding from its week three loss at the hands of West Branch, 48-7.

    St. Vincent-St. Mary (1-2) at Warren Harding (2-1), 7 p.m.
The Raiders have won back-to-back hard-fought games over Buchtel (20-18) and Perry (15-9) . Harding will attempt to move to 3-1 by hosting St. Vincent-St. Mary this Friday. The Fighting Irish have been outscored in its last two games by a combined 69-0 versus Perry and Walsh Jesuit.

    McDonald (2-1) at Western Reserve (3-0), 7 p.m.
Once, one of the biggest games on the calendar each year over a decade ago. This battle of the Blue Devils takes on that same atmosphere with undefeated Reserve welcoming one-loss McDonald to town. Western Reserve has allowed 16 points from its first three opponents. McDonald dropped its week three matchup, 20-7, to a very good Clearview team.

    Chaney (1-2) at West Branch (3-0), 7 p.m.
Chaney travels to Beloit to take on the West Branch Warriors in a key non-conference matchup that should lead to many computer points down the stretch for the winner. Boston Mulinix and Jeremiah Thomas ran for 138 and 130 yards respectively in West Branch’s 48-7 victory over Girard. Thomas also completed 10 of 12 passing for 136 yards. After posting a season-opening win over Akron East (21-6); the Cowboys offense has stumbled to scoring just 6 points over the past eight quarters.
