(WJW) — A sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper were injured after they crashed while pursuing a suspect through Portage County on Thursday.

It started at about 4 p.m. when state troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol noticed a white Volkswagen SUV with a stolen license plate on South Arlington Street, near Forbes Street in Akron.

Troopers tried to pull over the SUV, but investigators said the driver didn’t stop, leading to a pursuit.

According to the patrol, the SUV got onto Interstate 76 eastbound, leading troopers into Portage County. That’s when a Portage County sheriff’s deputy stepped in to help with the chase.

Investigators said the SUV swerved onto the state Route 43 exit ramp before cutting through a gore and getting back onto I-76.

At that time, the sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper collided and the chase was called off, according to the patrol.

The sheriff’s deputy was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The state trooper was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His K-9 partner, who was in the vehicle during the crash, was taken to a nearby veterinarian clinic as a precaution, according to the patrol.

Investigators said they’re looking through leads related to the suspected stolen SUV. The case remains under investigation at this time.
