Grass seeding could be rough locally right now

CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The rain in our area is a good thing this week, but it’s still not enough.

Farmers have been hit extremely hard by the dry weather. There’s a good chance your lawn is affected, too. It probably looks dried out and maybe has some green patches.

From mid-September to mid-October is usually when seeding or re-seeding is recommended.
OSU Extension Assistant Professor Timothy McDermott says it’s still good to stick to that timeline.

“The problem we’ve had is temperatures have been about 90 degrees lately, and that is just really difficult to get good germination started. There’s not soil moisture whatsoever in the ground, which is another key thing you need if you want to start plants, especially lawn grass,” McDermott said.

He also says whether your grass is dead or dormant impacts how you should treat it.
You can figure that out by seeing how it reacts to the wet weather.
