PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WKBN) – Giant Eagle announced Wednesday that it is lowering many of its most popular produce items by an average of 20%.

The grocer said the price reduction on more than 200 items across Giant Eagle and Market District locations will amount to an estimated $25 million in annual savings.

It’s called the New Low Price initiative and will impact items such as naval oranges, seedless cucumbers, large avocados, mushrooms and more.

For instance, naval oranges were $1.25 each — now they are $1. Seedless cucumbers were $2.50 — now they are $2. Mushrooms were $2.99 a pack — now they are $2.49, according to Giant Eagle.

Giant Eagle is calling the price reductions “long-term,” adding that industry factors may cause the prices of these and other items to change in the future.

Grocery prices surged more than 25% from 2019 to 2023 , faster than inflation for other goods and services. Although food inflation has slowed recently, the USDA reported that the food-at-home grocery prices were 0.9% higher in August 2024 than in August 2023.

While prices are expected to decelerate, the USDA reported that food-at-home prices are predicted to increase by 1.1% in 2024 and 0.8% in 2025.
