YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Warren man who was arrested in April by Canfield police on a gun charge has been indicted in federal court.

An indictment unsealed Wednesday in the U.S. Northern District Court of Ohio charges Derrick Eggleston, 37, with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment was issued Sept. 19 and unsealed Wednesday after Eggleston was arrested.

He is free on $20,000 unsecured bond after his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Amanda M. Knapp, where he pleaded not guilty.

According to court records, the government did not ask for detention. A new court date has not been set yet.

Eggleston, who was granted early release from federal supervision on April 3 after serving an 18-month sentence for the same charge he was indicted on Wednesday, was arrested on April 30 by Canfield police during a traffic stop after a car he was driving was pulled over for extremely heavy window tint.

Police searched the car after reports said they saw nuggets of marijuana inside and they found a semiautomatic pistol and 22 rounds of ammunition.

Reports said Eggleston appeared to be very nervous and asked police to do him a “solid” and just give him a citation before admitting he had a gun despite the fact he was legally prohibited from having it.

The indictment in the case said Eggleston also has a 2017 possession of heroin conviction in federal court, the original charge which bars him from having or being around guns.
