CLEVELAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Former NBA Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose announced his retirement from basketball.

The 35-year-old made the announcement on social media on Thursday morning.

Rose played 16 years in the NBA, including a brief stint in Cleveland. He played 16 games for the Cavaliers in the 2017-18 season, averaging 9.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

In 2018, the Cavaliers traded Rose to Utah in a deal that brought Rodney Hood and George Hill to Cleveland. Rose was waived by the Jazz as soon as the trade was completed.

In all, Rose played for six NBA teams, including Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit, and Memphis.

Rose was originally the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He went on to the Rookie of the Year, becoming the youngest player to earn the honor.

Rose finished his career with an average of 17.4 points and 5.2 assists in 723 games played.
