CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – A resident brought a concern to the Canfield City Council Wednesday night over a chemical spill cleanup.

The spill happened at Material Sciences back in July. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency investigated the spill but has not said what caused the issue.

Brad Kinkade spoke at the meeting and said the EPA told him the spill was an imminent threat. He says the initial clean-up crew did the bare minimum, claiming they used a 3-foot snow fence to contain the dirt that was dug up and used plywood as a dam for the wetlands.

“As soon as we got rain, their earthen dams collapsed, their plywood failed, the wetlands became contaminated and now you still have an issue with it going into the Saw Mill Creek,” Kinkade said.

Kinkade said that when the Ohio EPA returned five days ago, cleanup efforts ramped up, using trucks to pump out water and concrete barriers and taller fences around the dug-up ground.

A spokesperson for the Ohio EPA said the EPA did not take over the cleanup of the spill, however, the agency continues to work with the environmental contractor and the facility on the clean-up.
