YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Reports said police Wednesday found a gun, drugs and over $700 cash in an SUV driven by a man awaiting sentencing on a failure to comply charge.
Brandon Hasley, 31, was booked into the Mahoning County jail on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony; improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony; possession of crack cocaine, a fourth-degree felony; and two fifth-degree felony counts of possession of drugs.
He is expected to be arraigned Friday in municipal court.
Reports said police tried to pull over the SUV at about 7 p.m. after it was spotted making an illegal turn from South Avenue to West Dewey Avenue. The SUV did not stop right away, reports said, at times speeding up and then slowing down, until it reached Chicago Avenue.
Reports said that while he was driving Hasley at one point both hands out the window and it appeared a passenger was filming him with a cell phone. A cell phone was later recovered in the vehicle and taken for evidence, reports state.
Brandon Hasley was taken into custody for not stopping and when police searched the SUV they found a loaded magazine of ammunition on the front seat and an unloaded 8mm semiautomatic handgun under the seat, reports said.
A pill bottle with several types of pills was found in the driver’s side door and a bag of crack cocaine and $731 cash was found on Brandon Hasley when he was arrested, reports said.
Reports said Hasley said at first he did not know the gun was in the SUV, then he said he did touch the magazine after he noticed it was on the seat.
Brandon Hasley has a 2021 conviction on a drug charge that prohibits him having a gun. Additionally, he was free on bond awaiting sentencing on charges of failure to comply, a third-degree felony and possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony.
He was to be sentenced Tuesday but the sentencing was moved to Oct. 17. The plea agreement in the case calls for an 18-month prison sentence. Prosecutors said they would not object to early release after a year in prison if he was a good candidate to be released early.
The passenger was booked into the jail on a warrant from Summit County on a contempt of court citation for receiving stolen property.
