YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The 2004 Cardinal Mooney state championship team was honored during halftime of Mooney’s 27-0 win over Chaney on Thursday night.

Among those on hand for the 20th anniversary celebration were head coach PJ Fecko, along with standouts Kyle McCarthy and Desmond Marrow.

The 2004 Cardinals finished 12-2 on the season and claimed the state title with a 28-6 win over Versailles.

McCarthy, a senior quarterback and defensive back, ran for one touchdown, passed for another and returned an interception for a record 93 yards and another TD during the win.

At the time, it was the Mooney football program’s first state title in 17 years and the fifth total state championship.
