(WKBN) — Construction season can be a frustrating time for drivers when faced with detours and delays, sometimes leading to crashes and even fatalities. This year, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that there was a reduction in both.

During the Work Zone Safety Initiative that ran from June 1 through Sept. 30, OSHP reported an increase in enforcement stops and a decrease crashes and fatalities compared to 2023.

There was a total of 9,474 enforcement stops reported in Ohio work zones this year, an 18% jump from 2023.

OSHP reported a total of 1,917 work-zone related crashes during the safety initiative period, a slight 1% decrease.

The greatest difference this year was a 19% decrease in fatalities, with only 13.

OSHP reminds drivers the importance of sticking to the speed limit and driving without distractions, especially when driving in work zones near workers.
