    HS Football: Week 8 games to watch

    YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The playoffs are on the horizon; teams are looking to make their final push towards week eleven.

    Thursday, October 10
    Boardman (4-3) at Howland (1-6), 7 pm
    …After last year’s 1-9 finish, Boardman has made a drastic reversal to accumulate a winning record at the week eight mark of the 2024 season. Last Friday, the Spartans were upended by Harding – 19-14. The Spartans will play its final three games of the regular season away from home.

    Friday, October 11
    West Branch (7-0) at Alliance (2-5), 7 pm
    …Last year, West Branch got by Alliance – 49-41 – in a pivotal Eastern Buckeye matchup. Each of their last two meetings have been decided by 8-points or less with the Warriors coming out on top. West Branch has registered wins against the Aviators in each of the past four years. West Branch has posted exactly 64-points in its last two games.

    Struthers (6-1) at East (5-2), 7 pm
    …The Golden Bears have been one of the great stories from this year. Under second-year head coach Devlin Culliver, East has made a big turnaround this year. Struthers has navigated a difficult schedule to record a 6-1 record as we approach the second weekend of October.

    Sharpsville (6-1) at Farrell (3-4), 7 pm
    …For at least a share of first place in Region 1, Sharpsville and Farrell will meet on Friday with each holding a 3-0 region record. The Blue Devils have won five straight while Farrell has posted back-to-back wins; each earned a victory during their respective streaks by forfeit over Kennedy Catholic.

    Cardinal Mooney (2-5) at Harding (5-2), 7 pm
    …In each of the last two years, Mooney and Harding have decided each contest by single-digits. In 2023, Harding registered a 3-point victory (24-21). Two years ago, Mooney notched a 26-17 win over the Raiders.

    Grove City (3-4) at Hickory (6-1), 7 pm
    …Hickory topped Grove City twice last year including their District 10 3A semifinal victory, 38-7, on November 10. The Hornets have defeated the Eagles in each of their previous three meetings. The last time, Grove City has topped Hickory was on 2021, 20-7. The Hornets have won three in a row while the Eagles have dropped its last three games.

    Lakeview (4-3) at Hubbard (4-3), 7 pm
    …The Eagles were shutout in each of its past two league matchups (against Poland, 28-0; and Struthers, 25-0). Hubbard looks to even its Northeast 8 record at 2-2. Lakeview began the year with a 3-0 mark but have fallen in three of its last 4 games. The Bulldogs look to make a push towards the playoffs.

    Liberty (2-5) at LaBrae (6-1), 7 pm
    …LaBrae returns home to take on Liberty. The Vikings have scored an average of 47 points through its first three home games of the season. LaBrae has won its last three games including last week’s 25-20 thrilling win over Brookfield.

    Leetonia (0-7) at Lisbon (1-4), 7 pm
    …Last year, Matt Altomare was on the sidelines for Lisbon leading his Blue Devils to a 50-23 victory over Leetonia. This off-season, Altomare returned to lead the Bears once again.

    Fitch (6-1) at McDowell (5-2), 7 pm
    …A big-time matchup in Erie County as McDowell plays host to Fitch. The Trojans are coming off of a colossal showdown, a week ago, at Cathedral Prep. Fitch began the season with 5 straight victories before falling to Ursuline in week six.

    Springfield (5-2) at Mineral Ridge (4-3), 7 pm
    …The Rams are 1-2 this year at home as its setbacks were against Orange (50-22) and Lowellville (40-27). Springfield has posted four consecutive wins after last Friday’s 12-0 victory over Western Reserve. Ridge bounced back from its week six loss to Lowellville (40-27) to top Campbell – 40-8.

    Girard (4-3) at Poland (5-2), 7 pm
    …Poland notched a much-needed victory this past Friday over Niles after falling in two of their previous 3 games be a total of 15 points. Girard has won three of its 4 games away from Arrowhead Stadium, the Indians have played in three straight road games that were decided by one-score of less.

    Ursuline (6-1) at Villa Angela-St. Joseph (6-1), 7 pm
    …The rematch from last year’s Region 9 Semifinal that saw the top seeded Fighting Irish top Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph – 27-20 – to advance to the regional title tilt. Ursuline has downed the Vikings in three straight meetings.
