BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — Those attempting to enter a portion of Mill Creek Park Wednesday evening may have been confused when they discovered a portion of the park was closed.

The reason for the closure? To allow for the hunting of deer as part of ongoing efforts to cull the local park’s deer population .

In a Thursday update, Mill Creek MetroParks Natural Resources Manager Nick Derico says a total of 64 deer have been killed so far this season.

Derico said 10 deer were killed in the first week of the controlled hunting portion of the program, which includes the following regional properties in the Mill Creek Metroparks:

    • Hitchcock Woods
    • Huntington Woods
    • Collier Preserve
    • Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary
    • Springfield Forest
    • Hawkins Marsh
    • Vickers Nature Preserve
    • Sawmill Creek Preserve
    • MetroParks Farm

An additional 54 deer were killed by USDA sharpshooters in Mill Creek Park proper — the area between 224 and Midlothian — where the closure was recently noted.

On Oct. 1, the Ohio Division of Wildlife approved the request of Mill Creek MetroParks to have another 75 deer hunted and killed between the start of the month and March 31, 2025.

Deer herds need to be culled to prevent disease and over browsing. There are no natural predators present.

It's not hunting when sharpshooters round up the deer and mow them down. Hunting should be ethical and definitely not be taking place in a small public park. Sanctuary means a safe place, but not to the board of Mill Creek Park.
