YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Help Save Mill Creek Deer group hosted an Autumn Holiday Fundraiser on Sunday.

The event featured a basket raffle and baked goods at Westside Bowl on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown.

The group’s mission is to prevent deer culling in Mill Creek Park, as the Ohio Division of Wildlife approved hunting last year to help control the deer population. So far this season, 64 deer have been killed in the park and in the park’s regional properties.

The Help Save Mill Creek Deer group doesn’t agree culling is necessary.

“Trying to stop the hunt in Mill Creek Park is, I think, a no-brainer. Most people just really agree with it. They see safety as an issue. They don’t want hunters in their backyards. they go to Mill Creek park to visit the wildlife. They don’t want to see dead deer being taken out of the park,” said co-organizer Chris Flak.

The fundraiser was free to the public but donations were accepted to go toward the group’s expenses.

Tino DiCenso contributed to this report.
