(WKBN) — Political advertisements are everywhere during election season, but they may not be appropriate for younger children.

With election day nearing, political commercials are on TV, social media and phones, making them unavoidable to see. Children who may not understand the concepts or messages are also consuming them.

According to pediatric psychologist Kelsey Brocker, the commercials can be annoying for adults but they’re confusing for children. She says the more children see something, the more they’re curious. She believes the best way for parents to address concerns is to have an open, age-appropriate discussion with kids.

“Just really promoting, ‘Come to me. What kind of questions do you have about this? Let’s have an open conversation and in what way do these things align with our values or your values or who you are becoming as you become an individual?'” Brocker said.

She says parental guidance is essential when discussing sensitive topics.
