Austintown police: Woman in standoff died of self-inflicted gunshot wound

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Reports said a woman who died Friday afternoon after police were called to her Pinecrest Avenue home died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police reports released Monday said officers were called to her home just before noon for a report that a woman had shot herself inside the home. When police got there, a man was standing in the doorway holding a child, reports said.

Police could hear more gunfire inside the home as the man and child were taken away, reports said. They could also hear a woman inside yelling and more gunshots, reports said. Police outside the home tried talking to her through an open window, but after several minutes of more gunfire and yelling from inside, a single shot was heard from a bedroom and then the noises stopped.

Police kept trying to talk to her and called in the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team for assistance, reports said. After a “lengthy attempt” was made to get her to respond, a window was broken and a drone flew through the window and saw the woman inside dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports said.

The woman’s name has yet to be released by the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.

No one else was injured.
