Man shot and killed by Orchard Park police

The Orchard Park Police Department announced one person is dead after being shot and killed by an officer Friday night.

Two officers responded to the area of Hawthorne Drive and Poplar Avenue at about 8:50 p.m. for a report of a confrontation involving a gun and a knife.

Upon arrival, police say they found a man the department has had "prior interactions with in the past." According to police, the man was holding a knife and ignored commands from the officers.

It is alleged that the man advanced at the officers and was shot. The two officers began performing life-saving measures while additional emergency crews arrived.

Orchard Park Police announced an officer shot a man in the area of Hawthorne Drive and Poplar Avenue.

Chief Patrick Fitzgerald says they're in the early stages of the investigation, working with the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit and the New York State Attorney General's Office.

"There is a lot of work that has to be done on the investigation and it is too early to discuss the specifics of the incident," Chief Fitzgerald said in a press release. "Solid facts will be released once they are available."

The two officers involved will be on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
