GEORGETOWN, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A home in the Brighton Estates neighborhood just off of Chunchula Georgetown Road was destroyed by an EF 1 tornado just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The owner of the home did not want to share his name, but he told News 5 that both he and his girlfriend, who were inside the house while the twister came through, are lucky to be alive.

“I thought I was going to die pretty much honestly, just lay down and took cover,” the homeowner said.

He said he took cover behind the front door of the house while his girlfriend found safety in the closet.

“I got tossed around a little bit, and I got hit with some stuff,” the homeowner said.

Including the refrigerator that flew out of the kitchen into the living room. The couple took themselves to the hospital, and we’re told that they are OK besides some minor cuts.

Their home is now destroyed as the roof is damaged, the garage door is missing, and debris is everywhere.

“It was very terrifying especially since nobody else got hit it just happened very quickly,” the homeowner said.

The neighbors next door watched the entire thing happen.

“My daughter comes running into the kitchen screaming that the neighbor’s roof is flying off, and then my husband comes out of the bedroom saying that the tornado is above us,” Candice Bryan said.

Bryan says her husband immediately went to his neighbor’s house to check on them.

“He said when he got there, he could hear screaming,” Bryan said.

The couple said they are staying with family until they can figure out a long-term living situation.
