Elberta, Ala. (WKRG) — Candace Pickering has been teaching history to middle school students for four years.  And she says she can’t think of anything better than that.

“History is kind of my jam—so we get to do some storytelling and some reenactments–and I just like having a good time with them.”

The most recent history lesson was about the Middle Ages. But throughout their history learning there is fun–and props involved.

“We get swords–they make shields.  We get crowns.”

Her nominators for the Golden Apple are two 7th graders who say they didn’t even know each other had nominated Ms. Pickering. Until they were called to the office.

“Jennifer Smith, you need to be at the office now…”

It’s never fun for a middle schooler to be ‘Called to the Office. But now they know it was just to find out their Golden Apple nomination prevailed.

“The way she teaches—she teaches good. She teaches, not like other teachers.”

“Her mood all the time, she’s normally happy and if she’s not she’ll let us know. She just teaches us better.”

And the best part about all of this according to Pickering is it takes place in Elberta, Alabama.

“It’s a small school, we have a good community, the kids are great–there’s just a lot of opportunity in Elberta.

Our congratulations to Candace Pickering and Elberta Middle School for a job well done.
