MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — May 20 is National Rescue Dog Day , an annual observation to raise awareness of dogs in shelters.

According to ASPCA Pet statistics , “Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.”

Here in Mobile, the Mobile County Animal Shelter Intake Statistics note that approximately 139 dogs and puppies were admitted into shelters in April of 2024.

WKRG News 5 reporter Haylee Kennedy spoke with the City of Mobile Animal Services Department in early May, and shelter officials said at the time, there were 150 dogs in the shelter.

WKRG News 5 has partnered with HopHounds to showcase shelter animals like a Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix named Archie from the Mobile SPCA for our Pet of the Week series in hopes they find forever homes.

The News 5 team also knows the joys of adopting a rescue dog, and many in the newsroom have their own used-to-be shelter dogs.
