Supper Club severely damaged in Monday morning fire: Fairhope Chief

UPDATE (3:33 p.m.) FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — From the front of the building, it’s hard to tell anything happened at the Supper Club, which has been a mainstay in Fairhope for years. But the caution tape surrounding much of the property is a telltale sign of what happened in the back of the building early Monday morning.

“It was all orange, bright orange, and I thought, ‘God, what is going on?'”

That’s what Bill Mundy woke up to around 1:30 Monday morning.

Fire trucks from four different departments quickly lined Scenic 98.

“The flames were shooting 30 feet up; it was a wall of flames,” he said.

Hours after the fire was out, the damage was clear.

“It’s been here as long as I can remember.” Fairhope Fire Chief Chris Ellis said when fire crews arrived the fire was rolling. “On arrival, we found that the back portion of the restaurant was well involved, and it was extending into the brick portion.”

It took hours to get the fire under control and even longer to get it out.

“One truck came in hosing down my side of the house and the fence,” says Mundy. “Another one attacked the fire. Another one was doing the woods and the trees.”

The Supper Club closed around ten o’clock Sunday night after a busy night.

“They had redone and had a big dining room area, a beautiful bar; they had new wood; it was gorgeous”

All of that is now burned beyond recognition.

It’s something Mundy will never forget.

“When I saw it was on fire, I knew it was badly on fire,” he said. “I’ve never seen a wall of flames like that.”

The state fire marshal is looking into how the fire started. Plans for the Supper Club are still undetermined.

PREVIOUS STORY: FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Supper Club At Sweetwater Branch was severely damaged in a Monday morning fire, according to Fairhope Fire Chief Chris Ellis.

The fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Supper Club At Sweetwater Branch. The building’s rear was in flames, and the blaze extended to the front of the building.

Fire crews left the scene around 6 a.m. but had to return before 8 a.m. because the fire started again.

Fire departments from Fairhope, Daphne, Barnwell, and Magnolia Springs responded.
