ORANGE BEACH, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A boat was abandoned after crashing into the jetty at Alabama Point.

The incident was reported Monday morning and as of Thursday evening, the boat is still out there.

Dylan Mitchell and his fiancé, Kaitlyn Argo, said Monday was a typical beach day until Argo stumbled upon the wrecked ship walking down the beach.

“That was definitely something that I wasn’t expecting to stumble across on a day just strolling the beach,” Argo said.

The couple moved to Orange Beach a few months ago, and Argo said she’s never seen anything that compares to the wrecked ship.

“I was wondering how it got there, what situation led up to this moment and kind of was wondering why everybody was just acting like it wasn’t there,” Argo said. “I seemed to be the only person confused.”

On the other hand, Mitchell was not as shocked. He said that the jetty at Alabama Point is a notorious place for boats to wreck.

“I wouldn’t say an everyday type of thing, but definitely more common than it should be,” Mitchell said.

He said that people who are unfamiliar with the area often try to drive across the jetty rocks, not knowing how shallow the water is.

“It did make it quite a bit farther up on the rocks, caused a little bit more damage,” Mitchell said. “Most of the time, people end up on the sand or just at the bottom of the rocks and usually can be recovered same day. This one, he did manage to go above and beyond.”

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials said they’re continuing to investigate the boat wreck.
