MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Despite their underdog status in the state, all 52 of Alabama’s pledged Democratic delegates are expected to pledge support for Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention, according to sources.

In 2020, former President and current Republican nominee Donald Trump secured 62% of Alabama’s votes. Joe Biden snagged 36.6% of the votes. Mobile County Democratic Executive Committee Chair Ben Harris said the state Democratic Party has taken a more combative approach to attempt to win over voters.

“We’re working very hard to build our party,” Harris said.

In recent years, Harris said the State Democratic Party has worked to build a footprint in all 67 counties, getting their candidates to the polls and in front of the public. In swing counties like Mobile County, Harris said a strong presence could be enough to flip the votes.

“Mobile is, I think, probably the largest purple county in the state,” Harris said. “It’s still shaded a little bit red.”

Harris said the intercity precincts in Mobile are more likely to yield Democratic votes.

“I think the Harris-Walz ticket will win the city precincts by a pretty sizable margin,” Hariss said. “That’s been true for several election cycles now.”

Kamala Harris stepped into the race after President Biden announced plans in late July to drop out, endorsing the Vice President. Biden’s dropout came so late that Kamala Harris was able to bypass a traditional primary election, not winning a single vote.

“We recognize there were some voters who did not feel that they had a good choice,” Harris said. “Whatever other majority there is in the country, there is an anti-Trump majority, and there are folks who simply do not want that option.”

As the presidential election in November creeps closer, Harris and other Democrats are concerned about a recent report of thousands of legal non-citizens registered to vote. Republican Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen released his finding of 3,251 non-citizens within Alabama who are somehow registered to vote .

Allen pushed for the Board of Registrars in the 66 affected counties to purge those non-citizens from the voter files.

“It’s very concerning that there would be an effort to purge voter rolls this close to an election,” Harris said.

Harris said he has seen a lot of enthusiasm from the Alabama Delegates so far as Kamala Harris is expected to secure enough delegates to become the party’s nominee. The convention is set to wrap up on Thursday.
