WALTON COUNTY, Fla. ( WKRG ) — Samantha Hope Herring will attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago with her daughter, Savannah Atkins. The mother-daughter duo will serve as Florida delegates for the convention.

The family affair will also include the matriarch of their family, Herring’s mother Pat Dansky. Herring originally planned to bring her husband, but the announcement of Vice President Kamala Harris stepping up as the Democratic nominee changed her plans. She wanted to celebrate the potential of the first female president with other women.

“To have this historic opportunity, to realize it and to have to share it with three generations makes it more special than I can even communicate,” Herring said.

She and Savannah attended a Vice President Harris event in response to Florida’s restrictive abortion laws, which is an issue Herring fights for in her area.

“Women have less rights now than they did when I was a young lady,” Densky said.

Walton County is where Herring serves as Chair of the Democratic Executive Committee, where registered Republicans outnumber Democrats five to one. However, she fights to rally Democrats despite the disadvantage.

Florida is sending 307 delegates, alternates and other members of the DNC with 17 from the Panhandle.

More than 21,000 people in Florida have signed up to volunteer for the Harris-Waltz campaign, and two-thirds of the volunteers are women like Herring, her daughter and mother. The main focus for most of the female support is reproductive issues.

“A great future in Florida is possible. It is absolutely possible,” Savannah Herring said. “I believe that it was going to be something that would really affect the rest of generations.”

The enthusiasm will continue with Herring and her family in their don pearls, Converse sneakers and custom jackets, inspired by Vice President Kamala Harris’ Vogue cover in 2021.
