    5. Dumas Wesley Telethon Total

    All day Wednesday, News 5 teamed up with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians to raise money for the Dumas Wesley Community Center in Mobile.

    During the telethon, our viewers raised over $50 thousand for the organization. The money will go towards educational programs for children and the elderly. It also helps homeless women and children.

    4. Florida’s Great Outdoors Initiative

    Florida state parks have some of the most pristine ecosystems and unique wildlife in North America. A plan announced on Wednesday would add pickleball courts, golf courses, disc golf, and resort-style lodging to at least eight Florida state parks.

    The Florida Department of Environmental Protection calls the plan the 2024-2025 Great Outdoors Initiative. The DEP said it aims to expand public access, increase outdoor activities, and provide new places to stay overnight.

    At least one environmental watchdog group is encouraging people to complain about the proposed development via email and attend those meetings to express concerns.

    3. Shomari Figures to address the DNC

    Mobile native Shomari Figures, son of Alabama Senator Vivian Davis Figures, is expected to address the Democratic National Convention in Chicago tonight.

    He will be on the stage before Kamala Harris accepts the Democratic nomination for President.

    Figures is the Democratic candidate running to represent Alabama’s newly formed second Congressional district, which includes parts of Mobile County.

    2. New Baldwin County Band Trucks

    High Schools in Baldwin County have new trucks for their marching bands.

    Each high school in the Baldwin County Public School System has at least one new truck that will haul band equipment to and from football games.

    The school system spent $1.5 million to buy ten trucks. BCPSS is one of the only school systems in the entire country with a fleet of trucks like these.

    1. ATM Smash & Grab

    The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is searching for three people they say drove a stolen truck into a gas station before stealing the ATM .

    Deputies were able to later find the truck and part of the ATM. It happened around 5 a.m. Thursday morning.

    Anyone with information can contact the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
