    Mobile City Council OKs funding for new health and science building at Spring Hill College

    UPDATE (5:24 p.m.): Spring Hill College officials shared more about the new Health and Science Innovation Center after the Mobile City Council approved funding for the expansion during the city council meeting on Tuesday.

    According to school officials, the new building which will replace the former residence hall building, Walsh Hall, will expand education opportunities for the college.

    “It’s about, you know, being able to educate our students with our Jesuit Catholic mission,” Spring Hill College President Mary Van Brunt said. “That academic excellence and provide nurses and doctors and other health care workers for the city and the county of Mobile.”

    It won’t just be a new building. Brunt said that the building will feature advanced equipment like nursing simulators, virtual reality equipment and 3D anatomy table technology thanks to the city and county funding.

    “We are looking at new programs, you know, constantly talking with the local health centers in the area to see what other needs that Spring Hill can contribute to them,” Brunt said.

    Spring Hill College expects to break ground on the new center in January.

    MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Spring Hill College will soon have a new addition, as the Mobile City Council on Tuesday approved funding for a health and science building.

    This comes two weeks after the Mobile County Commission voted to approve partial funding of $750,000 for SHC’s new Health and Science Innovation Center. Following that approval, the college said it hoped for additional funds from the city.

    According to a press release from SHC, the hope was that the county and city funding would total $1.5 million to support the center, which officials say is “set to transform the College’s Nursing, Pre-Med, Health Sciences, and Natural Science programs.”

    Today’s agreement included provisions that the city pledged $750,000 to be paid over three years at $250,000 per year to Spring Hill College.

    This is in addition to the county’s pledge for the same contribution amount.
