MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Mobile SPCA is jumping into action after five Shih Tzus were dumped at the gate this morning.

A volunteer saw the starving dogs as she was entering the gate. There are two adult dogs and three puppies. All the dogs are severely matted and covered in fleas.

News 5 was there as part of WKRG’s Pet of the Week segment this morning when we saw the dogs in the holding area. In fact, the staff found the third puppy wandering in the woods while we were filming our segment.

“I couldn’t believe someone could neglect dogs like that,” News 5’s Devon Walsh said. “What is wrong with people? You couldn’t even see their little faces. They were scratching so badly. They were wagging their little tails even though they were so uncomfortable.”

The Mobile SPCA’s Robin Strickland said the dogs must be shaved. She is worried about the sores that lie beneath the matted fur. The dogs will have to receive veterinary care for weeks once they get them cleaned up.

The five little dogs seem very friendly. The puppies are adorable, despite the way their skin looks. They will be up for adoption in about a month, once they are deemed healthy.

The Mobile SPCA would appreciate any donations toward their medical care. To donate: click here .
