    5. Paralympics begin in Paris

    The Paralympics are now underway in Paris.

    Five French athletes lit the flying cauldron during Wednesday night’s opening ceremony.

    Over 4,000 athletes from 184 nations are there for 11 days of events, including 225 Americans.

    The athletes will compete in 22 sports for 549 medals.

    4. Fewer deadly traffic accidents reported in 2024 so far

    Fewer deadly traffic accidents reported on Alabama roads so far this year.

    A report from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency shows 560 deadly crashes on state roads in 2023.

    That’s 31 more than this year.

    ALEA officials said tailgating is one of the major causes of deadly crashes.

    Labor Day marks the end of the so-called “100 Deadliest Days” between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which is said to be the most dangerous time for teen drivers.

    3. Mississippi Gator hunting season

    Alligator hunting season begins Friday in Mississippi.

    Hunters will be able to capture alligators in the state, beginning at noon.

    Permits, which are no longer available for the season, are limited to a specific hunting zone.

    The season ends Sept. 9.

    2. Hurricane Katrina 19th anniversary

    Today marks 19 years since Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast.

    Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005.

    The storm caused extensive damage in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, especially New Orleans where 80% of the city was under water after the levees failed.

    Katrina is the costliest hurricane on record.

    According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the storm caused more than $193 billion worth of damage.

    1. First Mobile County Wawa now opens

    Two new Gulf Coast Wawa convenience stores are now open!

    Wawa is known for having fresh food including a great selection of made-to-order hoagies, drinks and convenience.

    The new Mobile Wawa at Cottage Hill Road and Sollie Road opened this morning, and a crowd was waiting!

    The first 100 people in the store received a free T-shirt when the doors opened at 8 a.m.

    A few hours later, a grand opening ceremony was held at the Robertsdale WaWa on Highway 59 and County Road 48.
