College Colors Day brings out the spirit of Auburn and Alabama fans

DAPHNE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — College Colors Day brought the soul back to the Dixie State as Auburn and Alabama fans debate which team is better.

The day marks the beginning of the college football season each year, and in Alabama, it calls for some fierce conversation.

“The majority of this store in Daphne would be Bama fans,” Daphne’s Bama Fever Tiger Pride Store Manager Scott Gibbons said. “It’s safe to say probably 65:35.”

While his store is split down the middle with an equal amount of Auburn and Alabama merchandise, even Gibbons has a favorite… Alabama.

The Crimson Tide is entering its first season without long-time head coach Nick Saban. Douglas Stewart, who just moved to the area from California, said that shouldn’t be a problem as Alabama’s new head football coach Kalen DeBoer is inheriting a lot of Saban’s recruits.

“I actually had a couple of kids from California that ended up going to Alabama for college. Nobody went to Auburn, they all went to Alabama,” Stewart said.

Auburn Head Coach Hugh Freeze has been at the helm of Auburn football for only one season, but Auburn fan Lisa Thomas said Freeze is filling the role well.

“I have two sons that graduated from Auburn,” Thomas said. “The atmosphere at Auburn is just a family atmosphere and it’s just wonderful.”

Despite Auburn’s 6-7 record in 2023, there seemed to be plenty of excitement on the plains for Freeze’s incoming recruits.

The Crimson Tide is set to face Western Kentucky on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Auburn will host Alabama A&M at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
