FAIRHOPE, Ala ( WKRG ) — Riley Leonard’s college football journey began in 2021 when he graduated from Fairhope High School and signed with Duke University.

After starring at quarterback for the Blue Devils for three seasons, Leonard transferred to Notre Dame for his final year of eligibility — where his impact continues to be felt on and off the field.

Leonard helped Notre Dame to a season-opening win against Texas A&M — in a matchup between two preseason top-20-ranked teams. Those ‘back home’ in Baldwin County are proud of Riley’s success on the big stage.

“Well, Riley left such an impact in this community. From a kid’s camp that he was a part of last year hosting, to just his influence speaking to different groups when he’s back home,” said Fairhope football coach Tim Carter. “His impact is far-reaching and I think it’s because of how positive he is and how community-driven he is. He’s gonna leave a legacy that’s going to be hard to match.”

Riley’s mom, Heather, says she’s always been proud of his athletic ability — but his work “off the field” is even more special.

“The most rewarding part has really been, since Riley was little, we would get notes or texts or a parent would come up to us and be like ‘Riley’s a real role model to my son, he’s a leader and he’s inspired my son to do better at their sport or just in life and be the best that they can be.’ And that’s all we can ask for as a parent. “

From Fairhope to Duke and now Notre Dame, Riley has been determined to keep his faith and positive impact the priority in all he does.

Notre Dame will host Northern Illinois in week 2 of the college football season.
