Tropical Storm Francine has formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico with wind speed at 50 mph. Current movement is NNW at 5 mph. Impacts to Acadiana are likely with a risk for a Category 1 Hurricane at landfall Wednesday evening.

The National Hurricane Center Forecast Cone shows Francine moving northward through the Gulf of Mexico while gaining more strength. The latest forecast shows a modest Category 1 Hurricane with wind speeds near 85 mph. Approximate landfall will be close to Vermilion Parish Wednesday evening after 4:00 pm. Timing, location, and intensity at landfall is still a bit uncertain.

Sustained winds could be as strong as 85 mph with wind gusts stronger than 90 mph. Some models are suggesting an even stronger storm possible. Rainfall totals are estimated to be between 4 to 8″ inches with isolated higher amounts. These high totals could happen in a short period of time causing flash flooding. Storm surge is expected to be between 4 to 8 feet.

Tropical Storm, Hurricane, and Storm Surge Watches have been put into effect for much of central and southern Acadiana.
