MONROE COUNTY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Frisco City residents watched in disbelief as flames overtook Chandler’s on Friday night.

Locals described it as a beloved grocery and staple for Frisco City.

“We are devastated by the loss of a staple of the community,” Craig Fitzhugh who recalled working at Frisco City’s only grocery store as a teenager unloading the truck before school. “Chandler’s was known for being (some say) the best buffet and lunch spot in the county. It was our hidden gem.”

Aja Moye lives two streets away from the store and captured pictures and video of the devastation

“Word travels quick in a small town, so it didn’t take long for everyone to fill the road around the store and watch it engulf in flames,” Moye said. “My thoughts were so heavy as this store has been around for many years. The owners losing something that has been a family owned business since it opened. All the workers losing their job. I worked there for a while and everyone seems like family, even the customers. It will be a huge loss for everyone. It’s so heartbreaking.”
