MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Researchers are close to marking a milestone in raising money for cancer studies in Mobile. The annual GO run helps raise money for groundbreaking work at the Mitchell Cancer Institute.

This year will be the 17th year for the GO run and they say they’ve raised nearly one-million dollars for cancer research in less than two decades.

The run draws hundreds of people to sprint around campus every year. They have more than 400 signed up and hope to exceed 600 by Saturday. The benefit raises money for gynecologic cancer research that’s conducted at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. It’s a small step for a cure as local researchers continue work to find it.

“Mitchell Cancer Institute, you won’t find another group of people, health care professionals, that are more passionate and advocate for their patients more than MCI does here. The funds raised will stay here, right here in the southeast, right here in Mobile,” said the Director of Constituent Engagement Shanna Thorpe.

Organizers say everyone will know someone with cancer and the disease touches many lives.
This Saturday the 5k starts at 8 a.m. with the fun run at 9 a.m. There’s always room for more.
