ROBERTSDALE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Baldwin County Fair is back in town, but opening night is canceled because of the weather.

This is the 73rd annual Baldwin County Fair here in Robertsdale.

Between the mud and pools of water on the fairgrounds, Fair Director Sonny Hankins said he canceled Tuesday night’s event because he wanted to play it safe.

“We’ve had almost a deluge this afternoon and we’re afraid someone might get hurt and slip and fall trying to get on and off rides,” Hankins said. “We just decided we better for safety purposes, we called it today, but we’ll be back in business tomorrow.”

If the rain holds off and the grounds dry up, the fair will open at 5 p.m. Wednesday, and it’s here to stay through Saturday night. Everyone’s favorite rides and carnival games are already set up and ready to go.

But you better enjoy it quickly, because Hankins said they are not planning to extend the fair after Tuesday’s cancellation.

Fair officials told us people can look out for a few rides this year. The biggest and newest one is called the Ring of Fire.

And they said that night owls should attend the fair Friday night for a special event.

“The biggest draw here is Friday night … what we call Madness till Midnight,” Joey Even, office manager for Arnold Amusements, said. “We open at 5, but they run a special armband from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and we stay open late.”

Fairgoers can get unlimited rides for $25 on Friday night.

Parking is free at the fairgrounds, and tickets for admission are $10, but children 12 and under, senior citizens, and veterans can get in free.
