ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. ( WKRG ) — If one thing has become evident since Waterfront Rescue Mission launched the Hope for Her program, it’s that many women need the program’s services.

Formerly a men’s shelter, Waterfront Rescue Mission officially opened its doors to women on Sept. 3. That night, 14 women arrived in need of a place to stay.

That number continued to grow. On their busiest night, they housed 33 women.

With 28 beds for overnight guests and 14 beds for women involved in their programs, Waterfront Rescue Mission is giving women a safe place to lay their heads at night and access to the services they need.

“We are definitely getting more women than we expected, which is just the biggest blessing we could’ve ever asked for,” Christina Matis, Women’s Rescue Program Manager said. “It just confirms for us why God called us to open this shelter in the first place is that there is a really big need.”

As the colder months inch closer, Waterfront Rescue Mission expects to see even more women come through their doors.

Waterfront Rescue Mission is looking for clothing donations and women who may be interested in volunteering at the shelter.
