MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Mobile Police Department conducted a three-month investigation focused on sales of illegal drugs on the south side of the city.

The area included Baltimore Street and Down the Bay areas, according to an MPD release.

News 5’s Kathryn Bruch rode along with Mobile Police in the operation and spoke with MPD Capt. Jonathan Lee.

“Drug buys in the south side area of Mobile, primarily Down the Bay,” Lee said. “The first location we’re hitting is not technically located in that area, but this target’s been making drug sales in that area and lives elsewhere.”

MPD said it conducted the operation due to complaints and information from residents.

The police department’s Narcotics and Vice Unit executed nine search warrants with the help of SWAT, Canine Detail, Gang Intelligence and the Tactical Intelligence Detail.

“We locate the different people, different locations,” Lee said. “And so, we need a variety of things. We did some direct enforcement through traffic in certain areas that were high in drug volume and made a significant amount of drug arrest there.”

The operation seized 580 grams of marijuana, 12 grams of cocaine, 12 grams of synthetic marijuana, 13 grams of methamphetamine, $32,366 in U.S. currency and seven firearms. There are still five outstanding targets.

“We get those leads; we follow up on them,” Mobile Police Chief William Jackson said. “Leads us to a day like today when we’re out here doing multiple warrants across the city and trying to curb the drug market.”
