Mobile County nonprofit tries to find new home

MOUNT VERNON, Ala. (WKRG) — A Mobile County-based non-profit is scrambling to find a new home after being asked by the Town of Mount Vernon to move out of their location by the end of the year.

Inside a small police precinct is the office of the Ambitiously Him Her King Foundation . The charity began in Mobile in 2018 to help young parents. Hard work, that’s only gotten harder.

“It is emotional. It takes a physical strain on you, it’s stressful,” said secretary Marsha Sewell.

In November of 2023 they moved into this Mount Vernon Town building rent-free after being asked to provide services in north Mobile County. But in June of this year, they received a letter asking the foundation to leave by the end of the year. They say it’s at a time when they say their services and supplies are in even greater demand.

“Since the abortion ban we have had an increase in young parents and over overwhelming, you know, calls from young parents, grandparents, they are, you know, now having to take custody of their grandkids,” said Founding Director Latonya Patterson.

Even though Mt. Vernon is much smaller than Mobile organizers say it seems like the need for the services that they provide to young parents is even greater in a rural area.

“We see that there are much more needy for Pampers and wipes and formula. We also see that they need more parenting classes there. No mobile area, not only just a parenting class, and some of them just need resources to help them understand and get a job resume,” said Sewell.

Organizers say it’s been difficult to find a place they can afford with their limited funding.

“We’ve had small grants, maybe 500 to 1 K to five K, but we haven’t been sufficient enough to get large grants to run successfully,” said Patterson. For more information click here .
