FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A seabird trapped in fishing gear near the Fairhope Pier is on the road to recovery.

Early Monday morning, a few fishermen and people walking by the bay noticed something in the water. When they realized it was a bird, they acted quickly.

Grabbing a kayak and a fishing net, they worked to scoop the bird out of the water to get it safely to shore.

The bird had some serious injuries as it was tangled up in a used fishing line and had a hook stuck in its body.

Luckily, they were able to quickly get it the help it needed, calling Fairhope Animal Control who transported the bird to the Orange Beach Wildlife Center for care.

The wildlife center said that the bird is still in critical condition, but they’re hoping it will soon gain enough energy and strength to heal from its injuries. They’re continuing to offer it supportive care in hopes of speeding up its recovery process.

Fairhope Animal Control told News 5 that this is the second call like this that they’ve responded to in less than a week. They said this is an important reminder of the importance of recycling and discarding used fishing gear so it doesn’t end up in the water or harming any wildlife.

Along the Fairhope Pier and at many popular fishing spots, there are monofilament recycling bins designated for the disposal of fishing gear.
